The Federal Government through the Apex bank in Nigeria has authorised the circulation of the new one hundred naira notes effectively today 19th Dec. 2014.
In a statwment issued yesterday, the CBN said "The commemorative N100 banknote unveiled recently by the President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, goes into circulation on Friday, December 19, 2014, Accordingly, all branches of the Bank have been directed to commence issuance of the currency in their respective
locations."
This in effect implies that the notes are already in the coffers of the Nigerian money deposit banks.
Nonetheless, the new currency notes will circulate alongside the old notes pending further directives from the Apex bank to completely phaseout the old notes.
Critics have it that the new note was paving way for a religious war in Nigeria due to the suspected removal of the usual arabic inscriptions on Nigerian currencies being replaced by a jewish writing. Others were of the opined that the new notes was a total wastage and shouldnot be of piority especially now that Nigeria is facing both political, and economic unrest coupled with the dwindling oil price and the devaluation of the naira.
