American Woman Jailed In Lagos For Pinging In Court

Megan Chapman ,An American woman and Co-Director,Justice Empowerment Initiative was on Wednesday locked up few minutes in the waiting Cell of the Lagos Federal High Court after being caught operating her mobile phone during a court session.

Megan, who was in court for a fundamental rights suit her group filed against the Ojora of Lagos, Chief Abdul Fatai Aromire, started using her phone while Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia was reviewing the case brought before her.

During the court session,the presiding judge, Justice Rita Ofili hurriedly expressed her displeasure at the disrespectful act thereby insisting that Megan be walked out of the court to a waiting Cell for about 20 minutes though later released after appeals by lawyers in the court.

Expressing her experience,Megan said "I was replying an urgent message. It was not like I intentionally disrespected the court but I have learnt my lessons. I have apologised to the court for my action.
The prison officers were kind to and treated me well in the short period I was there."

On her release, Megan Chapman said she had learnt her lessons though not intentional but that she only had to reply an urgent message.
