Federal Government Converts Alvan Ikoku College Of Education Owerri & Others To Federal Universities

Alvan Ikoku federal college of Education Owerri on Wednesday has officially been converted into a federal university of education. This decision was approved alongside other 3 Colleges of education across Nigeria by the executive council presided by president Goodluck Ebere Jonathan.

According to a briefing by the Minister of Information, Patricia Akwashiki, conversion of the affected colleges of education was necessary inorder to improve the quality of education as the converted colleges of education were part of the 21 federal colleges of education that had been awarding degree programmes in the last three decades under the close supervision of the different universities they are affiliated to.

The Information Minister further explained that the transformation in Nigeria especially the education sector needed to be backed up with institutions that could produce sound teachers hence the need for the conversion.

"We are heading to having more graduates in the teaching profession and hence the need for these universities to produce graduates in education. If we need quality education, we need quality teachers," he said.

Nonetheless,the converted institutions are Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri (now Alvan Ikoku University of Education, Owerri). Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo (now Adeyemi University of Education, Ondo); Federal College of Education, Zaria (now Federal University of Education, Zaria); Federal College of Education, Kano (now Federal University of Education, Kano )

The Education Minister Ibrahim Shekarau in another press briefing further cleared the air that the next step was for the Ministry of Justice to prepare amendment to the laws establishing the colleges.
