More Than 20 Dead In An Auto Crash On Lagos - Ibadan Expressway

More than 20 people have been confirmed dead on Sunday at about 9.30am in a ghastly automobile crash in the Lagos-Ibadan expressway while over 50 people sustained series of injuries.

The autocrash which involved an articulated vehicle and a Peugeot J5 bus, occurred at Sepo area of the highway.

According to eye witnesses who gave his name as Tonka Dada, the crash was due to over speeding, struggle for right of road and impatience.

He said, “I saw everything. I was by the roadside when the accident occurred. I was with my son who was going to Lagos when I saw two vehicles speeding as if they were competing in a race.

“The other vehicle was able to control the wheel, while the driver of the trailer lost control, tumbled down the expressway, and spilled out the passengers one after another.”

Words gathered from a survivor of the articulated vehicle revealed that most of them were Hausas travelling from Kaduna to Lagos and paid N 1000 each as bus fare

Confirming the accident, Mr. Salami an Official of The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) reported “A Peugeot J5 with number plate XS 626 LSV and a DAF articulated vehicle with number plate AA 902 MML, crashed as both drivers were struggling for the right of the way.
“They were both going to Lagos when the accident happened at about 9.30 a.m.,’’ he said.

“The Peugeot bus was loaded with passengers and goods but the casualty figure rose because the other vehicle was travelling to Lagos with huge number of illegal passengers,’’ he said.

Meanwhile Salami said that the corpses had been deposited at the Adeoyo State Hospital morgue in Ibadan, while the injured were taken to the University College Hospital, Ibadan Central Hospital and Kejide Hospital. (NAN)
