The National Council on Power ( NACOP ), recently held its first inaugural meeting after the inauguration performed by the minister of power Prof. Chinedu Nebo on behalf of the Vice President, Arch. Namadi Sambo in Abuja.

A communique has beem issued out of 40 memoranda received from stakeholders and presentation of 5 papers on power related issues. To this end, the council therefore adopted the following

- The establishment of specific state Ministries of Power, Energy and Rural Electrifications Board Agencies in ALL States of thr Federation

- The Coucil adopted the rangeof measures to mitigate vandalism including the legislations of stiffer prevention sanctions, deployment of appropriate technology for monitoring, tracking of vandals and increased sanitisation of members of the public.

- LAPTIN should be strengthened to facilitate human development in the power sector.

- Target of 20% by 2020 for renewable energy in harmony with the global trend.

- State and Local Government should be encouraged to make land available with certificate of occupancy to potential investors as equity and incentives to the investors were applicable

- That the federal Ministry of Power should approve a 3year appropriation cycle to fund transmission company of Nigeria system expansion plan.

- That the Federal Ministry of power and other relevant MDAs should maintain a Web portal on renewable energy development and energy efficiency data, projects initiations and technologies in the country

- That the Federal and State Government should allocate a 10% of the annual budget for the development of power project.

The council also recommends that 50% of this allocation should be dedicated to rural electrification projects
Finally, the council expresses deep appreciation for the President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan for approving the establishment of the National Council on power.

In his words " the power sector reform is on course with the objective of generating enough electricity to power our homes, industries and bussinesses"
