Nigerias Senate set to Abolish Dichotomy between HND and Bsc.

On a public hearing yesterday 22nd of October 2014 at the nations Federal Capital Territory , senators converged and suggested that in a bid to end the long time dichotomy between the Bsc ( Bachelor of Science ) degree holders and the HND ( Higher National Diploma ) , the nation educational board should either upgrade the later or perharps scrap it.

In a pratical scenario in Nigeria, a typical HND certificate holder is being underrated to its Bsc counterpart of which forms the basis for the senates arguement as it was done in developed nations like America where HND is no longer in operation.

According to Senator Akinyelure Ayo of Ondo central and his Osun counterpart, the history of HND was traced back to the 19th century in the UK where there was need to create middle level employment for soilders that retured from the world war, hence citing America as one nation that runs no diploma certificate progeamme.

On his part, senator Ike Ekweremadu (the nations Deputy Senate President ) emphasised increase in little to programmes of " no relevance" offered by most polytechnics of which could not be traced to support nation building.

On debating the motion, some of the senators stated that the division in both certificate was sentimental and of which might kill the prospective students interest in polytechnics if not handled with care.

The senate President, David Mark attested to the fact that the entry requirements to both programmes were different and so is the curriculum but was bias on the argument that polytechnics produce quacks as this is based on individual student involved as according to him " all schools produce quacks" but that debating on the dichotomy might not hold water, rather, the focus could be on an arrangement where some pokytechnics are upgraded to diploma awarding unstitutions.

Nonetheless, the education committee was given up to 4 weeks to feed back the house its reports while the bill passes second reading
